Sudden, unexpected loss of heart function, breathing, and consciousness.
Cardiac arrest usually results from an electrical disturbance in the heart. It's not the same as a heart attack.
The main symptom is loss of consciousness and unresponsiveness.
This medical emergency needs immediate CPR or use of a defibrillator. Hospital care includes drugs, an implantable device, or other procedures.
-
CPR stands for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. It is an emergency procedure consisting of chest compressions and artificial ventilations in order to keep the brain alive during cardiac arrest.
-
CPR Saves Lives.
Currently, about 9 in 10 people who have cardiac arrest outside the hospital die. But CPR can help improve those odds. If it is performed in the first few minutes of cardiac arrest, CPR can double or triple a person's chance of survival.
